The AWS console provides an amazing set of features and functionality with the click of a button. But when it comes to managing reservations, the tools, including the Reservations reports, don’t make it easy to see which AWS resources match with your purchased reservations.
Why? Because the AWS tools are built for teams working with elastic workloads, often changing deployed servers and services. Many of us don’t actually work that way. We deploy services with very stable workloads, like business applications for our organizations, and they run on the same server for months or years.
Asset Tracking Links Your AWS Services with Reservations
We had the same problem. We would spend hours every month trying to figure out which new reservations to buy. Add to that the cost of making a mistake. You can sell incorrect EC2 reservations back to the marketplace, but you need to keep RDS reservations for the full term, even if they aren’t matching anything. So if your reservations don’t match up, you can end up paying extra instead of saving!
We built a tool using RT’s Asset Tracking feature to manage our AWS instances, link them to reservations, and help purchase new reservations as needed. Now we manage our resources using our AWS dashboard in a fraction of the time, and we have more coverage than we ever had before.
